“Taxes are the price we pay for a civilized society” is the old socialist slogan we constantly hear to be reminded to pay taxes. But the truth is that taxes are what we pay for an impoverished society. Putting aside the immorality of initiating violence against innocents in order to collect taxes, the implications of taxation for the prosperity of a society are profound.
