Libertarianism in Canada isn’t necessarily generating waves and changing political thought. As a matter of fact, with Liberal Party leader Justin Trudeau gaining support to unseat Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Alberta’s Progressive Conservative Party winning another government, Ontario Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne gaining a majority and Toronto mayoral candidate Olivia Chow leading in the polls, the Great White North is veering even further away from libertarian principles.
The Libertarian Party of Canada is one of the most popular alternative minority parties in the country, which is why its leader, Tim Moen, has launched a campaign trying to appeal to voters and explain to them what libertarianism really means as opposed to what they think it is with slogans and sound bytes.
Although it’s very doubtful that libertarianism will ever enter the mainstream in Canadian politics, it’s interesting to see libertarians address many of Canada’s problems, including government healthcare and education, two elements that Canadians take pride in because they’re “free” and run by bureaucrats.
Libertarians will have a long journey gaining momentum in Canada.
