Bill Gates has been quite busy since stepping down as chairman of Microsoft. He has been busy trying to solve the world’s problems, including the lack of access to clean drinking water.
Gates is making news after publishing a video of himself drinking a glass of water that was made from feces. According to a blog post he published, his organization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, is supporting a machine called the Omniprocessor, a device that can convert sewage into clean water, generate electricity and clear up waste.
Ostensibly, sewage facilities either turn this stuff into solids and place it in the desert or burn it using diesel. Although the machine won’t turn this matter around over night, it can become ubiquitous in the next decade.
The most interesting aspect of this machine is that it can help developing countries finally gain access to clean water without drinking contaminated liquid, something that the United Nations and other governments have tried to remedy for so many years.
Another interesting element to this development is the fact that today we constantly predict doom and gloom for our planet tomorrow, but we never foresee the solutions that we’ll produce. This is one of those things.
File this under the free market and human ingenuity solving another problem.
