It was during the 2008 presidential election campaign that then-Texas Republican Congressman Ron Paul gained widespread public exposure. Despite the media outlets attempting to silence the “Champion of the Constitution,” his line of reasoning was too much to ignore and his contradictory statements to the status quo were enlightening.
A great segment from 2008 depicts exactly this. Although free trade agreements are celebrated by public officials and supposed free market economists, Paul argued that they only serve special interests and destroy jobs, an argument that had been ignored since 1992 when Ross Perot ran for president.
At the time, the American people were fed up with the wars, corruption and lies coming from the Bush Jr. White House so perhaps this is why Paul garnered so much support, though it wasn’t enough to combat the likes of John McCain and Mitt Romney.
Summary: free trade is great; free trade agreements aren’t.
