How much do you spend on food at home and how much do you spend at restaurants and fast-food joints? If you’re strapped for cash then this is probably one of the reasons why you have a few pennies leftover at the end of the month. Let’s face it: eating at home is a lot cheaper than going to a restaurant. No time? Plan out a weekly menu; it’ll save you money.
This chart (via Carpe Diem) illustrates how eating at home vs. eating away has essentially matched up, and the gap has slowly dwindled since the end of the Second World War.
It’s interesting to note out that in 1875 about 95 percent of household just ate at home. With unhygienic restrooms, questionable ingredients and not being able to see the food cooked in front of you (anyone watch Kitchen Nightmares), why would people spend more of their money at restaurants?

There are so many cheap good places to eat out. I almost never eat breakfast out, it is so easy to make at home.
Good Mexican food is easier to find away from home, I like a good Mexican platter with 4-5 different items, too much trouble at home. Also, you cannot beat Golden Corral for $10, no way to get that selection at home.
