Sometimes, you have to look at the personal financial situations and spending habits of public officials to get a glimpse of how likely they’ll blow your tax money. A lot of these politicians feel entitled to luxury boats, fur coats and expensive restaurants, and they’ll later justify the abuse of your tax money.
Florida Republican Senator Marco Rubio’s personal finances are coming into question as he undergoes his bid for U.S. president.
The New York Times published an article that looked at how extravagant Rubio can be. For years, the young GOP senator has been shackled by student loan debts, mortgages and an additional loan against the value of his home. Ostensibly, his finances were saved because he was paid $800,000 from a publisher to write a book about being the son of Cuban parents. He used this money to pay off his student loans, but to also buy an $80,000, 24-foot luxury speedboat.
Of course, that’s just a tip of the iceberg in his story.
During his rise in politics, he took advantage of a state Republican Party credit card to help for pay for travel to a family reunion and placed his relatives on campaign payrolls. Oh, and he also used the money to help pay for a paving project at his home.
Is that all? Nope.
He got into debt when he leased a $50,000 2015 Audi Q7. Apparently, Rubio has a very low savings rate and has touched his retirement savings accounts, which most experts say is a very, very bad idea because it hurts your winter years and kills you when it comes to tax season.
These were just some of the reasons why Mitt Romney decided to go with Paul Ryan instead of Rubio as his running mate in the 2012 presidential race.
Rubio released a statement to the newspaper: “Like most Americans, I know what it’s like for money to be a limited resource and to have to manage it accordingly. Our primary financial motivation over the last 15 years has not been to become wealthy. It has been to provide for our children a happy upbringing and the chance at a great future.”
We can only imagine how Rubio would use your money as president. If the incumbent president is any indication then Rubio will likely make Obama look like Scrooge. It’ll be quite comical when he talks of fiscal prudence but then uses your money for expensive restaurants.
