The financial situation of Greece only deteriorates, and this isn’t boding well for Greeks. Not only are banks closed Monday, but they may be shut down for at least six days. Moreover, Greeks are only allowed to withdraw 81 euros from ATMs this week to prevent any further runs.
Although it seems the banking system is on the cusp of utter collapse, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is urging everyone to be calm and has reassured the population that their money is safe and secure. Simply put: your money is safe but you can’t have any of it because we say so.
Here are the audacious words of Tsipras:
The recent decisions of the Eurogroup and ECB have only one objective: to attempt to stifle the will of the Greek people.
They will not succeed. The very opposite will occur: the Greek people will stand firm with even greater wilfulness.
In the coming days, what’s needed is patience and composure. The bank deposits of the Greek people are fully secure.
The same applies to the payment of wages and pensions- they are also guaranteed.
In these critical hours, we must remember that the only thing to fear is fear itself.
Greeks should be afraid, very afraid when the government declares something safe.
