In an episode of “Seinfeld” entitled “The Opposite,” George Costanza decides to do the opposite of everything he has ever thought of or done. Instead of tuna on toast and coffee, he has chicken salad and a cup of tea. Throughout the episode, he fights back against movie theater seat kickers, told the truth to a job interviewer and railed against George Steinbrenner’s actions of the New York Yankees.
It led to tremendous success for George: a new girl, a new job, a new life.
What does this have to do with government and central banks? Like George, they’re liars, failures and inadequate. Like George, they need to do the opposite.
For the United States government and the Federal Reserve, they should take a lesson from from George Costanza and do the opposite of everything they’ve ever done, every instinct they’ve had to rob, cheat and steal from the general public.
Here is a brief list to start off with:
– Presently, the U.S. government robs the people through taxation. Do the opposite: give the people back their money and cease forcefully extracting money from the people’s pockets.
– Presently, the U.S. government intervenes into the domestic affairs of foreign nations and installing leaders they want. Do the opposite: embrace a non-interventionist foreign policy and leave other countries alone. Don’t start wars and invade and occupy countries.
– Presently, the Fed inflates the money supply and controls interest rates. Thus destroying the greenback and hurting the general public. Do the opposite: embrace sound money, allow the market to determine interest rates and stop interfering in the free market with the boom and bust cycle.
– Presently, governments at all levels make the lives of the average person expensive and hellacious with new taxes and regulations everyday. Do the opposite: leave everyone alone!
This is just the start. The government and central bank could do a whole lot more if they embraced Costanza’s opposite shtick.
