When you think of enemies at the office, you tend to think of a co-worker or a supervisor. However, an enemy doesn’t have to be a person or an inanimate object but rather feelings, actions and ideas. These are perhaps the key hindrances to any type of advancement in your career.

Envy, intolerance and workaholism could very well be the things that are holding you back from a promotion, a pay raise or another employment opportunity at a different company. You could believe that colleague of yours got that new manager position because he/she backstabbed you. No. Instead it was your own insecurity that prevented you from moving up the corporate ladder.
In order to solve these problems, you will have to perform a great deal of introspection and speak with professionals or others in the same position as you. If you refrain from doing this then your career could stagnate and you will never be satisfied with how your career turned out.
Here are the five enemies you may have at the office that are destroying your career:
Envious of Others’ Success
A colleague has just been awarded an “Employee of the Month” plaque. A neophyte co-worker was just given a promotion to a senior position. A supervisor has finally moved up to management. Are you happy for their success? No, you’re envious of any sort of success, whether they’re your friends or co-workers, happen to come upon. Envy isn’t a good trait to have and should be quashed immediately. Remember, others can determine if you’re bitter and envious.
Insecure About Your Work, Skills
You start a new project or assignment and right away you think to yourself that you’ll be unable to complete it. You then start to think of the worst case scenarios. In other words, you’re insecure about your work, your skills and your intellect. Insecurity is seen by your superiors immediately. If you’re not confident in your productivity then why should they promote you?
Unsure What Decisions to Make
They say that curiosity killed the cat. But it’s actually indecisiveness that murdered the feline. Unable to make a decision by yourself can lead to an array of factors, including project delays and atrocious assignments handed in. One of the reasons why someone is promoted because they have shown moments of leadership and decision-making by themselves that have led to quality results. If you can’t do then your career will be buried.
Intolerant and Insensitive of Your Colleagues, Bosses
A colleague of yours has horrible allergies. Your boss is terribly ill. The office janitor just spent an hour cleaning the lunchroom. Instead of practicing sympathy, empathy and understanding, you do the exact opposite. In other words, you’re intolerant and insensitive to others’ situations and feelings. Just because someone has allergies it doesn’t mean they’re extremely dirty or contagious. When the office janitor spends a great portion of their time cleaning it doesn’t mean you can make a mess right away.
Addicted to Working Long Hours
Finally, workaholics are an interesting bunch. They believe they have to work 15 hours a day because other people can’t do a certain job. Only you have the acumen to do it, right?! Others come in at 8 a.m. and leave at 10 p.m. because they have no other place to go or hobby to enjoy. They’re making up for a void in their lives. Workaholism is counterintuitive because now it’s viewed as something negative by both management and subordinates. Remember, there’s another world out there so don’t be afraid of it.

Final Thoughts
The 23-year-old manager isn’t your enemy. The mailroom clerk isn’t your enemy. Your boss isn’t your enemy. You are your own worst enemy. If you can’t remedy some of these feelings then you won’t be able to succeed in life. You’ll be stuck in neutral, bitter about how others passed you by. Don’t be envious, don’t be intolerant and don’t be insecure.
