The sharing economy is a billion-dollar business and has allowed millions of people to become entrepreneurs, freelancers or contractors overnight. Everything from sharing a ride with someone to using their room when you’re traveling, the likes of Uber, Airbnb and Feastly are changing the economy. But the status quo – big business, governments and professional associations – doesn’t like this, which is why they use outmoded regulations to curb and quash innovation.
This video from LearnLiberty takes a look at the sharing economy and how government is using regulations from before the advent of the Internet to take down these businesses and individuals. They say it’s all in the name of protecting the consumer, but in reality it’s for two things: getting their share of the pie (taxes) and protecting their cronyist pals.
