A new report suggests that the number of Americans renouncing their United States citizenship in 2015 reached a new record. If that number continues to grow ever higher than perhaps those walls Donald Trump are proposing will be used to keep people from leaving the country.
According to data released by the Internal Revenue Service, 1,426 Americans gave up their citizenship over the past three months. This means the total number of Americans renouncing their citizenship this year is 3,221. This is also the highest amount ever recorded for the first nine months of the year.
It’s reported that if close to 200 more Americans ditch their passports then it will set up a new annual record.
The figures keep increasing, even though the federal government increased the cost of renouncing your citizenship to $2,350, up from $450 a few years ago. Sure, the walls aren’t developed yet so the government will just use high costs to prevent you from leaving.
With higher rates, the IRS generated $7.5 million in revenues by processing the renounced citizenships. However, the number may be a lot bigger than that since wealthy Americans are slapped with an immense expatriation tax.
Eugene Patrick Devany says
“an immense expatriation tax” in addition to the fee is not the only thing keeping the numbers low. There are millions who swear that they will leave the country if this or that bum is elected but they never do. Most others countries are at least as bad.
