GOP frontrunner Donald Trump has long stated that he wants his fellow billionaire, Carl Icahn, to become his Secretary of the United States Treasury if he should become elected. As one of the nation’s most active and richest investors (he’s worth more than $20 billion), it would be an interesting change from what the country has seen under Jack Lew or Timothy Geithner.
At first, Icahn turned down the offer, but then he changed his mind and accepted the request. Today, he has formally acknowledged he does not want the job.
Speaking at the New York Times Deal Book Conference on Tuesday, Icahn has zero interest in having one of the top positions in the U.S. government.
“There’s no way I would ever do that,” Icahn said. “I’m not ever going to be secretary of anything in Washington.”
He added that he’s still supporting Trump for president because he couldn’t see anyone else in that role. “I want someone who’s going to shake up Washington…you need somebody like a Trump that can face up to [Congress] and get something done.”
The polls show that Trump is still leading the Republican field, though Ben Carson is inching his way ever closer.
