Last week, former Secretary of State and likely 2016 Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton espoused a number of economic fallacies in just 35 seconds.
Delivering a campaign speech in Washington State, Clinton stated a handful of economic myths that the crowd ate up. A couple of them were the whole equal pay for equal work hot garbage (SEE: 5 random things for a Friday (gender pay gap, Walt Williams on free trade, GOP sabotage of Ron Paul in 2012)) and the other is that the minimum wage doesn’t kill jobs. Huh? She says there’s evidence to back this up, but that is total nonsense.
Here is the video of Clinton not making any sense:
As legendary economist Murray Rothbard pointed out during his career: the minimum wage is compulsory unemployment.
It may feel good to raise the minimum wage, but it’s a disaster waiting to happen for those who are uneducated, unskilled, inexperienced or young. David Neumark opined in the Wall Street Journal last year:
“Some proponents defend a higher wage on other grounds, such as fairness, or compensating for the low bargaining power of low-skill workers. But let’s not pretend that a higher minimum wage doesn’t come with costs, and let’s not ignore that some of the low-skill workers the policy is intended to help will bear some of these costs.”
The effects of a higher minimum wage are already being seen in Seattle with a vast number of job losses in the restaurant business (Seattle’s minimum wage hike leads to job losses).
Economics is a man’s best friend when talking policies purported by politicians seeking power. It’s the best defense we have. Unfortunately, not everyone is interested in this area because the statists feel that economic truths pose a threat to big government and their taxation, regulatory monster. And when the serfs are told by their party or guy in charge what to think or say they obey.
Clinton’s supporters in the video above – we can’t omit our Bernie Sanders friends – are part of the problem. They eat it up. Whenever some Santa Claus-like politician promises free stuff and more money without any sacrifice the people clap like trained seal pups.
For shame.
