As part of efforts to add to government coffers, jurisdictions all over the world have implemented or are considering a fat tax, a sugar tax and/or a soft drinks tax. Although governments say it’s a way to combat obesity and to take care of government-run healthcare initiatives, it’s just a way to extract funds from individuals to put in the hands of politicians.
Earlier this year, it was discovered that the federal government had considered a tax on soda pop. Liberal Finance Minister Bill Morneau had requested an internal analysis regarding the “issues and impacts in respect of a potential tax on soft drinks.”
It was estimated that the Justin Trudeau government would levy nearly $2 billion each year in tax revenue. Although Ottawa has since moved away from such a tax, the government has promised better information pertaining to foods with a lot of sugar.
The push has resurfaced this week.
The federal government isn’t the only one in Canada that wants such a tax. It was reported in 2013 that the Ontario Liberals wanted to implement a fat tax similar to what has happened in Denmark – the Danish Parliament eventually abolished the tax because it led to a wave of unintended consequences (SEE: Danish government abolishing the world’s first fat tax, cites economic failures).
Nevertheless, it’s likely only a matter of time before Canadians will have to face such a tax.
In order to show their opposition to this form of nanny statism, Students For Liberty, a group of pro-liberty students from all over the world, will launch a Toronto corner store on Aug. 11 to poke fun of the rising nanny state and government-approved lifestyle regulations.
“We’ve decided to create a Nanny State Corner Store to mock the increasing level of lifestyle regulations being passed by all levels of government. We at SFL Canada want to ask the very simple question: Do we want a government that treats adults like children? Or do we want a society that respects an adult’s freedom to choose?” said David Clement, North American Programs Director with Students For Liberty, in a statement.
All over Canada, public officials and bureaucrats want to put graphic labels on alcohol, pass more laws to limit consumer choice and to ban tobbacco packaging.
The mock corner store will have government approved chocolate bars, chips and soda. Essentially, it’s what a store that would look like if the government had its own convenience store. It will be located at 3148 Bathurst St, North York, ON M6A 2C2.

Damn, and Americans can not think of something similar to make their voices heard?
Maybe their chains have become Too Tight for their brains to work?

The mainstream media has become the most predominant Church in America. They define the monsters and Dragons and square off the left and right leaning forces in the grand arena while adding the color commentary.
Solving the Nanny State was always a simple as understanding the “US” and “THEM” Public Service that employs media propaganda reinvents your environment [social marketing] as the servants reinvent their duty as one of self promotion rather than what they are paid to do. The served are now the servants.
A government who acts as though it serves the needs of children, can only exist as long as we continue to act out as helpless victims, divided into special interest groupings, all competing for the spotlight, in a grand “pity me” competition.

It has been far too long since the words Liberty, freedom and adult choices graced our headlines. The problem people can’t seem to accept is that the people who bring you the news are advertising agencies, who accept as their largest client Left leaning governments. The Government has a sword fiduciary duty to serve the tax payers. An ad agency has the same duty to serve their clients. If their clients but ads that make things like the exaggerations of fat pandemics, smoking risks and global warming, the same politicians who promoted these things with tax payers money then claims to believe what is in the news and set out to protect us against those dangers. It started with the UN/WHO anti-smoker movement and that process was so successful that it was expanded to all of our government ministries. The media paints environmental and Health impact assessments as a study to determine if a move is wise while the process actually trains the participants in the path to success and how to attract financial stakeholders to profit by it’s enactment.
This all sounds too easy to write off as the workings of conspiracy nuts, however there is so much confidence in the protectionist rackets it is all right there in the open at the WHO site for anyone who wants to take the time or has the courage to read it. A Public Health “Movement”[Their phrase] sounds like some new approach to dealing with the small percentage of people who cost the rest of us more money. It was never new when you consider Hitler did it first. They not only borrowed his anti-autonomy soap box they actually have the nerve to use his same words. For a Liberal to be insulted by the connections drawn to fascism, perhaps those frets of indignity are not so well placed, when you ask yourself; Why it was such an abhorrent thing to do when they made AIDS a gay disease and used the same model to make Cancer a smoker’s disease.
Attaching divine intervention to the reality that no one really wants to find more humane treatments or cures for cancer, as it was with AIDS, [before medicine gave in to public pressure and started to take action in the real world, outside of the political stereotypical world] if only those we don’t like are affected. Truth be told less than point one percent of smokers ever experience Lung cancer, Six million smokers constant over sixty years saw 10,000 cancers, with the number of smokers now reduced to 45 million we now see 30,000 cancers. The cancer described by Doll in his connection with smoking is far more associated to non smoking today. While the rate of new cancer cases in spite of, less than half as many smoking, has more than doubled over the past 20 years. These are numbers from the Canadian Cancer Society. [The “conquer cancer” [anti people] crowd; who no longer seek a cure when a wagging finger creates more profit] one of the largest sponsors of the status quo, because they profit from every tragedy caused by Cancer and few will ever rock that industry sponsored trough.
