News Story of the Day: New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio thought he was going to be the city’s champion after he promised to equip the sidewalks with free Wi-Fi. It may have sounded like a good idea, but like most political initiatives the laws of unintended consequences were revealed yet again.
New Yorkers will no longer be able to use the web-browsing feature of the city’s sidewalk Wi-Fi kiosks. The city announced that they will be disabled after numerous complaints were made pertaining to homeless people taking over the kiosks and watching porn.
LinkNYC installed 400 kiosks across the Big Apple. It is now working with city officials to come up with solutions to avoid this problem in the future.
“The kiosks were never intended for anyone’s extended, personal use and we want to ensure that Links are accessible and a welcome addition to New York City neighbourhoods,” LinkNYC said in a statement.
To no one’s surprise, the homeless have been the most dedicated users of the kiosks.
Moving forward, the kiosks will continue to offer phone charging, Wi-Fi and free domestic calls.
Chart of the Day: what’s that? The European banks have been recovering since the 2008 economic collapse? Not so, according to Bloomberg, which published a chart that shows many of the big banks are still on the brink of a crisis.
Illustration of the Day: the average voter is pretty skeptical of the government during non-election years. Unfortunately, this is an election year and any common sense and distrust of politicians or the government are thrown out the window. This meme captures exactly this idea:
Quote of the Day: this past week was great 20th century thinker H.L. Mencken’s birthday (September 12). His thoughts and ideas on politics were definitely ahead of their time. This is why the statements he said or wrote a century ago ring true today. Here are five of his best:
“A good politician is quite as unthinkable as an honest burglar.”
“Democracy is a pathetic belief in the collective wisdom of individual ignorance.”
“A newspaper is a device for making the ignorant more ignorant and the crazy crazier.”
“Unquestionably, there is progress. The average American now pays out twice as much in taxes as he formerly got in wages.”
“Every decent man is ashamed of the government he lives under.”
Video of the Day: we’re midway through the month of September so that means elementary, high school and college students have fully integrated into the new school year. But that also means that you will likely see plenty of protests and demonstrations because they were triggered by a microaggression. Just in case you are unaware of the new movement across college campuses, here is a compilation of the special snowflakes who are the most intolerant bunch:
