HBO’s John Oliver was bashing third parties and their respective candidates in a new segment this week. As expected, Oliver vehemently criticized Green Party nominee Jill Stein and Libertarian Party nominee Gary Johnson because of their gaffes and lack of policy details.
In one part of the segment, Oliver made the claim that the White House and the Federal reserve do not have a connection. Oliver repeated the lie that the United States central bank is completely independent from the federal government. He continued the propaganda recently uttered by CNN (SEE: CNN ridiculously claims Federal Reserve is NOT political).
Here is the clip (it starts at 4:50):
The idea that the Fed and the likes of Alan Greenspan, Ben Bernanke and Janet Yellen are not partisan is asinine. Historian Thomas DiLorenzo writes:
“The Fed operates for the benefit of its executive branch controllers, the banking industry, and Fed employees themselves, at the expense of the rest of society which suffers from the economic instability it creates. Worse yet, many Americans have been conned into believing that the Fed Chairman operates like the Wizard of Oz, hiding behind dark curtains, pulling levers and pushing buttons to make the economy operate smoothly. So-called “scientific socialism” may have been the most absurd and destructive idea of the twentieth century, but it is nevertheless the guiding ideology of central banking.”
Former Texas Republican Congressman and three-time presidential candidate Ron Paul wrote in “End the Fed” that everyone knows in Washington that the Fed is a political institution. (SEE: Is the Federal Reserve a political institution? Ron Paul says it’s ‘an open secret in Washington’).
Since Oliver reaches millions of people all over the world and regularly grabs mainstream media headlines, people will take his comment at face value and not actually research the history of the Fed. This is dangerous.
