Despite promises from President Obama that healthcare costs would be lower under his plan, it seems the Affordable Care Act (ACA), otherwise colloquially known as Obamacare, is actually costing you more.
The United States Department of Health and Human Services confirmed in a new report that monthly premiums sold on the federal exchanges will see their largest jump next year. The report noted that premiums for the silver-level plans will spike by an average of 25 percent in the 38 states using HealthCare.gov.
Last year, the increase was 7.5 percent.
Americans are not only facing surging premiums, but they also have fewer options to choose from since many several large insurers decided to exit some the markets established under Obamacare.
Of course, much of this was predicted when the entire initiative was started by the president. As InfoWars pointed out on Tuesday, liberals slammed anyone who argued that Obamacare premiums would skyrocket as the years went by, accusing opponents of espousing conspiracy theories. Here is what Media Matters wrote in 2010:
“Right-wing media are using an exchange between President Obama and Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-TN) to falsely claim that the Senate health care bill would cause individual health insurance premiums to increase. In fact, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated that the Senate’s version of health care reform would result in lower premiums for most individual enrollees.”
The Obama administration attempted to soften the blow by averring that U.S. consumers will be protected.
“Even in places of high rate increases this year, consumers will be protected,” Kathryn Martin, assistant secretary for planning and evaluation at the health department, told reporters. “The odds are good you’ll find plans more affordable than what the public debate about the ACA might lead you to expect.”
Some are wondering if this is really the plan by the Democrats to start a single-payer system. This is what Robert Wenzel of Economic Policy Journal suggests:
Are they trying to crash this thing on purpose to bring on full socialized medicine?
It would be a Saul Alinsky-style move.
Whenever the government intervenes into a sector, you will experience higher costs. It’s just the nature of the state.
