If you think that the mainstream media have ignored the treasure trove of information coming from the WikiLeaks dump of Hillary Clinton campaign emails and have solely focused on the Donald Trump sex scandal then you are right.
The Media Research Center released its analysis of the coverage between the WikiLeaks emails and Trump’s sexual assault allegations. And the gap is immense, but it wouldn’t shock anyone who is paying attention to the 2016 U.S. election.
According to the report, from Friday evening to Thursday morning, the morning and evening shows on ABC, CBS and NBC dedicated more than four hours of coverage pertaining to Trump’s sex scandals. How much coverage did the WikiLeaks emails from Clinton high-level staff members receive? Just 36 minutes.
What makes the analysis even more interesting is the fact that the 36 minutes of coverage never looked at the content of the emails.
Here is what the organization writes:
Journalists quick to be critical of Trump dismissed the entirety of the email leak as a “distraction” (Nancy Cordes, CBS This Morning on October 13) with “no major bombshells” (Kasie Hunt, NBC’s Today on October 8). CBS This Morning on October 13 even invited on New York Times correspondent Mark Leibovich to talk about the leaked emails, — a reporter who himself was featured in the leaked emails for having Hillary Clinton approve one of his stories about her. Yet not a single CBS “journalist” even mentioned this huge potential conflict of interest.
Incriminating emails that were mentioned, such as Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta’s comments about “needy Latinos” were only mentioned in passing. In the case of a series of anti-Catholic emails, the worst examples were ignored.
A large focus of the network news coverage of WikiLeaks has been on how the emails were hacked and leaked. This is a legitimate news topic, but if these were leaked emails from the Trump campaign, would the same effort be put into caring about how the emails were released, instead of focusing on their content?
Of course, the emails reveal findings that would disqualify any other presidential candidate. Everything from pay to play to heavy media collusion, from inciting violence at campaign rallies to stealing the Democratic primaries, the WikiLeaks email dump contain a lot of details that the media are simply ignoring. As you peruse the emails, you can understand why.
