It seems with every administration, the executive branch garners more power. The United States saw this with Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and then Barack Obama.
Of course, the hypocrisy will be right there. The Republicans will oppose greater presidential powers when they’re not in office, but then use it to their advantage when they are in power. Ditto for the Democrats. This is something Glenn Greenwald warned about in a recent op-ed piece: liberals fear Donald Trump will abuse his presidential authority, but then supported the incumbent president’s abuse of executive power.
In a recent interview with Vice magazine, President Obama stated that he doesn’t want his successors to get too impatient with democracy and then immediately turn to executive action to get their way. This is interesting because that is what he’s done for the past eight years, and the Democrats cheered him on.
No matter who is sitting in the Oval Office, the executive branch must be restrained because then you might as well have a king.
