Since the election of Donald Trump, the left has been surprisingly espousing some libertarian ideas.
Time magazine is urging 65 million Americans to avoid paying taxes, liberals are urging civil disobedience of the United States president and suddenly some of the so-called anti-war left are opposing war (though, Trump hasn’t even been inaugurated yet).
This has many asking the question: are liberals suddenly becoming libertarians?
Lauren Duca, a prominent liberal freelance journalist who recently appeared on “Tucker Carlson Tonight,” tweeted out over the weekend that Americans shouldn’t pay taxes because the president-elect supposedly doesn’t.
Here is the tweet:
“If Donald Trump doesn’t pay taxes, why should any of us?”
If Donald Trump doesn’t pay taxes, why should any of us?
— Lauren Duca (@laurenduca) January 7, 2017
Although many within the libertarian community would be pleased of that happening, the likely conclusion is that it is petty partisanship.
Like so many on the left and right, Duca probably lacks any principles and is suddenly joining the chorus of those urging you not to pay taxes because a Republican is president. Remember when the Tea Party wanted to avoid paying taxes in the Obama years? They were called racist, homophobic and bigots because they wanted to revolt against taxation and big government.
The similar pattern can be seen when it comes to states’ rights and secession. For years, conservatives and libertarians were accused of racism because they supported a state’s right to secede from the union. Now that Trump is elected, all of a sudden the left endorses states seceding from the union.
Where is the consistency? Where are the principles?
If Duca and others like her were genuine about not paying taxes then they should be saluted and welcomed to the movement. However, if Hillary Clinton was elected, Duca and her ilk likely would have continued espousing the virtues of paying taxes and still accused the right of racism, homophobia and sexism for not wanting to pay taxes.
What a world we live in…
