You likely won’t see Gary Johnson’s name on the ballot in 2020.
The former New Mexico Republican Governor and two-time Libertarian Party presidential candidate has “vowed to never again run for the presidency,” reports the Albuquerque Journal. This may please many libertarians who were immensely disappointed by Johnson’s 2016 bid for the White House.
Will Johnson still play a role in politics? Reportedly, Johnson will still keep Our America Initiative running and fight for the legalization of marijuana in the U.S.
Despite being unable to garner any significant momentum in the general election, Johnson made party history by generating the most support in any presidential campaign. Alongside former Massachusetts GOP Governor Bill Weld, Johnson received nearly 4.5 million votes, or just over three percent of the vote. This is the most any Libertarian Party nominee has ever gotten.
Who will lead the libertarians in 2020? One can only hope someone who will stand by genuine libertarian principles.
