So much for being the anti-war party…
It turns out that, after this month’s remarks from several Democratic Party officials, libertarian commentator Tom Woods was right when he wrote in “33 Questions About American History”:
“It is equally untrue that the Left has long opposed war, as a casual glance at American history makes clear. Ever since the Spanish-American War of 1898, liberals have more often than not been at the forefront of calls for American military intervention abroad.”
Earlier this week, California Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell accused Russia of “attacking” the United States by interfering in the 2016 presidential election. After arguing that Vladimir Putin engaged in an “act of war” against the U.S., Swalwell confirmed on “Tucker Carlson Tonight” called for an extension of sanctions against Moscow, which is also an act of war in itself.
Here is the interview between Swalwell and Carlson:
Meanwhile, California Democratic Congresswoman Jackie Speier averred that Moscow committed an “act of war.” She also incorrectly compared Putin to a tarantula:
“In terms of trying to understand this, I think of a spider web with a tarantula in the middle. And the tarantula, in my view, is Vladimir Putin, who is entrapping many people to do his bidding and to engage with him,” she told a Congressional committee on Monday.
Speier was quickly mocked on Twitter for her comments.
New Hampshire Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen also said that the alleged Russian hacking of the U.S. election may have been an “act of war.”
“We should think about whether it is an act of war or not,” Shaheen noted earlier this month.
Now, what exactly is the natural response when a supposed act of war is committed? You strike back with an equal or more aggressive response. It is unclear what Democrats want to do. If you apply sanctions then not only is that an act of war in itself, it will also cripple millions of Russian citizens. If you use military force then you enter into an unending battle and renew the Cold War.
Here is another question: since Stalwell and other Democrats believe Russian meddling in a foreign election is an act of war then should countries all over the world declare war against the U.S. for doing the exact same thing? What about surveillance of allies?
The Democrats are heading down a slippery slope for something that practically has zero evidence.
Whatever the response is, Democrats are willing to restart the Cold War just because they hate Donald Trump so much.
Ostensibly, this kind of talk is gradually garnering bi-partisan support, including from Arizona Republican Senator John “Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran” McCain.
“When you attack a country, it’s an act of war,” McCain said late last year. “And so we have to make sure that there is a price to pay so that we can perhaps persuade Russians to stop this kind of attacks on our very fundamentals of democracy.”
Unfortunately, as long as you have the John McCains and Lindsey Grahams, you will always have a GOP ready, willing and able to get involved in military interventions. Therefore, the current state of domestic affairs is troubling because you now have a two-party system that is flirting with some kind of war.
