The old adage of “do as I say not as I do” should be the campaign slogan of all politicians moving forward.
As millions of Americans across the country celebrated #EqualPayDay, a day to pay attention to the debunked myth that women are paid 23 percent less than men because of sexism or something, a new report suggested that Massachusetts Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren paid her female staff members less than their male counterparts.
Women working for Warren were paid just 71 cents for every dollar paid to men during the 2016 fiscal year, according to new analysis from the Washington Free Beacon, using public Senate data. The median annual earnings for male staffers were $73,750, while the annual earnings for female staffers were $52,750.
Here is an interesting tidbit from the report:
“Five men—Warren’s director of oversight and investigations ($156,000), legislative director ($149,458), deputy chief of staff ($119,375), Massachusetts state director ($152,310), and deputy state director ($113,750)—earned more than Warren’s highest paid woman staffer in 2016.”
Last year, Warren referred to #EqualPayDay as “a national day of embarrassment” rather than a day to celebrate, adding that “the game is rigged against women.”
“Today is Equal Pay Day, and by the sound of it, you would think it’s some sort of historic holiday commemorating the anniversary of a landmark day that our country guaranteed equal pay for women. But that’s not what this is about. Not even close,” Warren said in a statement.
“The game is rigged against women and families, and it has to stop. It is 2016, not 1916, and it’s long past time to eliminate gender discrimination in the workplace.”
Ostensibly, Warren did not issue a statement this year.
Of course, Warren isn’t the only female politician to pay their male staffers more than their female staffers, even though they decry the supposed pay gap.
Former New York Democratic Senator, former Secretary of State and two-time presidential candidate Hillary Clinton paid females 72 cents for each dollar paid to males. Moreover, Clinton, demanding companies to pay interns, did not pay her own campaign interns.
Who can forget former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi? It was discovered that she was not paying her entry-level staffers a minimum wage, despite forcing companies to pay the minimum wage.
Ditto for former U.S. President Barack Obama, New York Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo and Louisiana Democratic Governor Jon Bel Edwards.
It is pure hilarity and hypocrisy at its finest. But what can you expect from politicians?
