Wow. This is certainly terrifying.
Speaking at a police gathering in Selden, New York, President Donald Trump encouraged police officers to rough up suspects. This encouragement was then applauded by the cops standing behind the president.
Here is what the president told officers:
“Like when you guys put somebody in the car, and you’re protecting their head, you know, the way you put your hand over their head…I said, ‘You can take the hand away, O.K.?’”
Scary. (Reports suggest that the president was just kidding around.)
His defense is that the laws are stacked against honest and law-abiding citizens, which is true to a certain extent, but that is no excuse to abandon the principles behind “innocent until proven guilty.”
Although innocent until proven guilty is often dismissed by political opportunists, the media and partisans, it is a fundamental concept of the United States that should be protected at all costs. Before you know it, the justice system will be morphed into “guilty until proven innocent.”
Should the police start beating up suspects, too?
