What is it about politicians and disrespecting taxpayers? When they wake up in the morning, it seems like every public official thinks of a new way to waste taxpayer dollars (or euros).
It is being reported by Le Point, a French magazine, that President Emmanuel Macron spent more than $30,000 on makeup in his first three months as head of France. This is as bad as his predecessor, Francois Hollande, who spent thousands of taxpayer euros on his hair every month.
Reportedly, the president’s personal makeup artist submitted two claims to the French taxpayers: one for €10,000 and another for €16,000. The makeup professional did Macron’s makeup during his travels and prior to press conferences.
When the government was questioned about this blatant abuse, representatives noted that the government had to call “in a contractor as a matter of urgency.” At the same time, Macron aides promised that spending on makeup would be “significantly reduced” moving forward.
This isn’t anything new for politicians in France. Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy had taxpayers dole out €8,000 a month for his makeup.
But, hey, this is how politicians get elected and stay in power. During the very first televised United States presidential debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon, the general public deemed Kennedy as the winner because he looked fresh and clean (thanks to the makeup), while Nixon appeared disheveled and dirty because he dismissed the suggestions to apply makeup.
