Sure, a border wall might stop people from illegally coming in. At the same time, a border wall might prevent people from leaving.
The border wall, which Mexico was supposed to pay for, was major component of President Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign. Despite other presidents pledging to build a wall or a fence (Clinton, Bush, and Obama; even Hillary Clinton supported such legislation), it garnered fierce opposition from leftists, the media, and Democrats. Most Republicans seemed to favor Trump’s policy proposal.
It is important to remember that a significant portion of the nation’s illegal immigration problem are those with visas overstaying their welcome.
That said, the border remains a divisive issue.
ReasonTV recorded an objective video that contains interviews with Trump supporters and political candidates and lists some facts about the costs. It also makes a point about eminent domain, and the folks interviewed seemed indifferent about it (just imagine if former President Barack Obama did that!).

I take my kids to Big Bend. Last summer my daughter and I went just to get away and think. We saw two black bear that come and go from Mexico. I want my grand kids to experience this as well. We need to secure our border but the best way is to remove the incentive as to why people come in. If here to work vet them if not don’t reward them. The drug war is fueling crime and illegal entry as well because of the profits gained through prohibition. The drug war is a whole other subject.

Until you change the law that if you are born in the USA you are a citizen, not much will change. As long as an emigrant family can come into the USA and have an anchor baby and then have access to our welfare programs for the entire family, it will not stop. Until employers are stopped from hiring illegal workers, nothing will change. Until all drugs are treated like the drug alcohol, you will not stop the flow of drugs into the country.
