How great is life when you can spend a significant portion of your day watching television, surfing the Internet, and getting fat? Life is definitely different from what it was years ago, toiling in the fields, washing your clothes on a rock, and going to bed early because you din’t have light.
Thanks, capitalism.
According to a new study by Eurodata TV Worldwide, Americans and Canadians consume four hours and three minutes on average per day of television. This is around one hour more of TV each day than the rest of the planet.
Europeans watched three hours and 49 minutes per day, though Swedes spent fewer than two hours a day in front of the idiot box.
Interestingly enough, Asians generally consumed less television, coming in at two hours and 25 minutes – the Chinese viewed just a little more than two hours.
The study did not include video games, Internet consumption, and fiddling around on your smartphone.
What’s interesting about the study is not so much the amount of television being consumed, but the amount of advertising that is being watched. If you’re watching traditional television, then you get exposed to a lot of commercials. Out of those four hours, about a quarter of that is viewing commercials.
Although many Americans are cutting the cord, they’re still wasting a lot of time watching shows and movies.
