Do you like paying taxes? Well, only if you have been sold a bill of goods that legalized theft is what you pay for a civilized society. If you know any better then you probably detest the act of giving half of everything you earn to the government.
But you’re not alone, though the number of you may be coming down a bit, says a new survey.
According to a Gallup poll, nearly half (45 percent) of Americans say their taxes are too high, down from 51 percent a year ago. The study also found that 48 percent of Americans think their taxes are just about right.
What about party divide? From the polling firm:
The latest decline in Americans’ belief that their taxes are too high mostly results from fewer Republicans holding this view. Currently, 45% of Republicans say their taxes are too high, down from 62% a year ago and 72% in 2016 during the presidential primary campaign. Meanwhile, there has been no meaningful change in the percentages of independents and Democrats saying their taxes are too high, at 49% and 39%, respectively, today.
The slight majority of Republicans (52%) and Democrats (52%) now say their taxes are about right. Political independents, at 44%, are less likely to say this.
