One of the most interesting developments in the age of President Donald Trump has been the Democrats.
All of a sudden, Democrats are championing free trade, slamming the president for fiscal irresponsibility, and demanding the White House seek congressional approval for military intervention. The latest shift? States’ rights!
On Friday, Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY) went to Twitter to proclaim his support of federalism. This guy has been in public office for most of his adult life, and it has been quite rare for him to go on public record advocating states’ rights.
Here is what he tweeted:
THREAD: It’s official. Today, I am formally announcing my plan to decriminalize marijuana at the federal level. It’s time we allow states, once and for all, to have the power to decide what works best for them.
— Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) April 20, 2018
I have long believed that states should function as their own laboratories of democracy. My bill is a step in the right direction aimed at removing the barriers to state legalization efforts.

It is truly remarkable that a central planner statist like Schumer is endorsing states’ rights when it was quite the opposite during the administration of former President Barack Obama.
Everything healthcare to right-to-work pushes, Schumer has done everything in his power to limit federalism.
This is just another case of, as Andrew Heaton called it, Freaky Friday politics.
But both sides are guilty of this. Just look at the GOP right now and the issue of marijuana. Attorney General Jeff Sessions is going after the states because of drugs.
So you can’t really blame Schumer for being a political opportunist. He’s just going with the flow.

Now if we can get both sides to apply this to other issues. I will work with anyone that moves the ball of liberty down the field. It’s a start!
