Feminists, social constructionists, and the left routinely talk about gender equality, whether in business or politics. To them, everything needs to be 50-50, that is unless it favors women. But then it defies their own logic of what equality really means.
The province of Ontario is in election mode. With Premier Kathleen Wynne trying everything to hold onto power and Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford already losing ground, the New Democratic Party, which is essentially a socialist outfit, is attempting to make considerable gains.
And it is quite possible that the NDP could surprise everyone and form government.
Over the weekend, NDP leader Andrea Horwath announced that more than half (56 percent) of NDP candidates are women: of the NDP’s 124 candidates, 69 are women.
“We’ve always as a party been very committed to making sure that our representatives, our candidates that we put out in a campaign, represent the face of our communities,” Horwath told a crowd of supporters. “When people are serious about electing more women, you can put in place procedures and processes that ensure that that outcome happens.”
But isn’t equality the primary goal for feminists?
It isn’t really equal if the NDP candidates are 56 percent female and 44 percent male.
