Well, the Counterfeit News Network is out with some fake news again.
The media outlet that poses as a journalistic outfit claimed on Friday that there have been 22 school shootings so far this year. That’s tragic, if it were true.
Here is the tweet:
Including today’s shooting incident at a Texas high school, this year there have already been 22 school shootings where someone was hurt or killed. That averages out to more than 1 shooting a week. https://t.co/DL1wCUAipq pic.twitter.com/Qsw0WlLlJv

But it isn’t even close once you start combing through the company’s own criteria.
This is how CNN describes a school shooting:
-
A shooting that involved at least one person being shot (not including the shooter).
-
A shooting that occurred on school grounds.
-
We included grades K through college/university level.
-
We included gang violence, fights and domestic violence.
-
We included accidental discharge of a firearm as long as the first two parameters are met.
Simply put: they are counting anything that happens on school property as a shooting. If a Chicago gang members shoots a fellow criminal at 9 p.m. on school property, then CNN would count it as a school shooting.
Here are some of the ludicrous examples the website used:
“A student shot another student with a BB gun in Gloversville Middle School.”
“A teacher accidentally discharged a firearm during a public safety class. No one was killed.”
“Two non-students were shot at a dorm at Central Michigan University – and police blamed a domestic dispute.”
“A 14-year-old shot a 17-year-old in a targeted murder attempt in a parking lot of a school.”
This is obviously misleading.
When you think of a school shooting, you think of Newtown, Parkland, or Santa Fe.
People will read the headline and immediately conclude that mass school shootings are prevalent and occur every single day. Unfortunately, they won’t dig through the report and call out some fake news.
