It looks like McDonald’s is ramping up its automation efforts to replace human workers with technology.
And you can thank the Fight for $15 crowd for the fast-food giant’s latest push.
During every quarter for the next eight to nine quarters, McDonald’s will install kiosks and other mobile order technologies to 1,000 stores, which would help phase out human employees from the front-lines.
CEO Steve Easterbrook told CNBC:
“What we’re finding is when people dwell more, they select more. There’s a little bit of an average check boost.
“If you think about only two years ago, if you were a customer there were two ways you can get served at McDonald’s. You walked to the front counter and line up and take your drink and find a table or you go through the drive through. We’re introducing many options. They can order through mobile, they can come curbside and we’ll run it out as well as the existing traditional ways. You can pay in different ways and customize your food in different ways. I think we’re trying to add more choice and variety.”
Easterbrook has really helped turn the dying franchise around when he took over the reins just a few years ago. As the analytsts prognosticated that millennials would kill McDonald’s for fresher options, like Chipotle and Five Guys, the company has seen its stock reach record highs and same-restaurant sales hit all-time highs.
