Some on the right were outraged over the weekend when it was reported that the Red Hen restaurant kicked out White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders because the owner disapproved of her politics. The left, meanwhile, was pleased by the decision by the business owners.
It was an interesting Freaky Friday turn of events. The right was upset by a private business refusing service to a patron. The left was happy that a private business discriminated a customer.
So, who’s right?
Well, it’s simple: no matter what, any private company should have the right to refuse business with anyone, whether it’s over politics, religion, skin color, or they just don’t like people with blonde hair. Simply put: no conservatives allowed should be just as allowed as no blacks allowed.
This isn’t an endorsement of a terrible business practice. It is a view that respects private property, even if their business model is odious. Freedom of Association and Freedom of Speech are essential to the fabric of the nation, as well as private markets.
Plus, if somebody doesn’t want to serve Sanders or a gay couple, then there are plenty of other businesses that will serve them. That’s the nature of free markets and capitalism. If an entrepreneur is foolish enough to deny a customer service, especially in today’s contentious environment, then they will inevitably lose to their competitor.
What’s even more fascinating is the hypocrisy and lack of moral conviction among the left and right.
If the left truly believed that businesses should not discriminate anyone and should serve all, then aren’t they obligated to condemn Red Hen?
To be fair, the right is mixed on what happened over the weekend. That said, if the right supports private property and Freedom of Association, then they should defend Red Hen like they did Masterpiece Cake.
By the end of it all, at least we got to enjoy another hilarious tweet from President Donald Trump.
The Red Hen Restaurant should focus more on cleaning its filthy canopies, doors and windows (badly needs a paint job) rather than refusing to serve a fine person like Sarah Huckabee Sanders. I always had a rule, if a restaurant is dirty on the outside, it is dirty on the inside!
