Seattle initially passed the Make Amazon Pay tax, but then, after noticing immense backlash, several council members decided to remove the levy. It was a significant blow to movements across the country to institute a jobs tax – or was it?
But perhaps jurisdictions think they can get away with this type of tax on employment by giving it another name.
Mountain View is considering adopting a “Google tax.” It would mean that the government would apply an employee tax on businesses with more than 50 workers in the city. Officials estimate they would raise roughly $6 million a year.
Unlike Seattle that tried to use the money for the homeless, Mountain View wants the revenues to enter into the general funds that can be wasted on some progressive cause du jour.
The proposal is slated to be on the November ballot.
These people are nuts.
