Let’s be honest: Hollywood is churning out garbage, and it has been for many, many years. The days of “Sweet Smell of Success,” “The Maltese Falcon,” and “Sunset Boulevard” are long gone. They are not coming back.
Unfortunately, the gullible moviegoing public eat it up, which means Tinsel Town will still produce garbage.
Case in point, U.S. box office revenues reached a record $3.3 billion in the second quarter, mostly because of mediocre blockbuster films and kid-friendly pictures. The previous record was $3.1 billion, which was during the second quarter of 2015.
And analysts are already projecting a superb third quarter, thanks to “Ant-Man and the Wasp,” “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation,” “Skyscraper,” “Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” and “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.”
Superheroes, generic disaster films, repetitive animation, and sequels.
Boring.
