The Toronto municipal election is in a couple of months, and a whole host of candidates have filed their papers to run for the top job in the Big Smoke.
But one candidate is making headlines for a bold proposal: seceding from the province of Ontario.
Jennifer Keesmaat, Toronto’s former chief planner and left-leaning mayoral candidate, tweeted that the city should secede from the province.
Now I have had a chance to sleep on it. Secession. Why should a city of 2.8 million not have self governance?

Good!
This isn’t the first time that the local politicians have suggested that the biggest Canadian city should exit Ontario. There have been numerous calls for Toronto secession in recent years, especially as the 416 gets all the attention in both the province and the country.
Mayor John Tory dismissed the proposal:
“I heard this week about this idea of Toronto seceding from Ontario, and I thought to myself, well, it just sounded like a ridiculous idea. And then I read that my opponent slept on it overnight and came forward the next morning and said, ‘Yeah, I have slept on it, and it’s still a good idea.’”
This comes as Premier Doug Ford shocked the political scene by announcing that he will slash the Toronto city council in half.
Although secession should typically be supported, this is just another example of double standards on the left. One moment secession is racist if the right wants it. The next moment secession is just if the left wants it.
