In today’s hostile political environment, there is nothing more controversial than the truth. What’s even more fascinating is that both sides of the political aisle accuse each other of engaging in Orwellian tactics.
Though the right is guilty of this behavior, it is more pronounced on the left.
Because the truth has come into question, one prominent astrophysicist wants a modern-day Ministry of Truth.
Neil deGrasse Tyson tweeted on Monday:
I’m okay with a US Space Force. But what we need most is a Truth Force — one that defends against all enemies of accurate information, both foreign & domestic.

“I’m okay with a US Space Force. But what we need most is a Truth Force — one that defends against all enemies of accurate information, both foreign & domestic.”
In other words, he wants a government agency to deem what is truth and what isn’t. Just like Eurasia was never at war with Oceania.
From “1984”:
And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed – if all records told the same tale – then the lie passed into history and became truth. “Who controls the past,” ran the Party slogan, “controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.” And yet the past, though of its nature alterable, never had been altered. Whatever was true now was true from everlasting to everlasting. It was quite simple. All that was needed was an unending series of victories over your own memory. “Reality control,” they called it: in Newspeak, “doublethink.”
Tyson is no Michio Kaku, but he is still a respectable media figure. It’s too bad that he wants the state to determine the truth.
This can only lead down to a slippery slope.
Kevin Beck says
This Tyson punk is about as useful as a hernia.
He would only call out for a Ministry of Truth if he sincerely believes he will be a part of this Truth Squad. The reality is his idea deserves all the respect one would extend to the town drunkard.
