The Republicans want to pull a Bill Clinton and raid Social Security.
Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) recently proposed an interesting idea: permit Americans to tap into their Social Security benefits to take time off of work after having a child or adopting one. In exchange, parents would delay receiving their Social Security by three to six months.
Rubio contends that this will not lead to more government spending, create another entitlement, or a payroll tax hike.
On the surface, this seems like a commendable proposal, but once you start scratching underneath the surface, you realize that it will never work. Why? Social Security is broke.
But The Wall Street Journal makes the best point: the GOP wants to use Social Security for paid family leave, but then the Democrats will propose in the coming years to use SS for college tuition. It will never end.
Whatever the funds are used for, there isn’t anything there. Again, Social Security is done for.
