This is the problem of populism: sure, it rails against the establishment, but their economic policies are just as horrific – even more so.
Case in point, Italy and its so-called citizens’ income.
With the Five Star Movement rising to power, the government is rolling out its basic income program. For households earning less than $10,612 a year, Rome will provide income support and a housing allowance that total more than $900 a month for single people without an income.
Unlike other guaranteed income proposals, where you get money just for breathing, there are some caveats.
While it is extended to pensioners, people of working age are also eligible. However, these working-age individuals must take a suitable job, otherwise they will lose this income. Businesses will also receive a discount on social security contributions should they hire a worker who receives this benefit.
Pundits claim that it targets the wrong people, and the project should help foreigners and families with several children.
But it seems the program is going to be abused because tax evaders could nab these benefits.
Populism can be fun at first – who doesn’t love to take down the elite? It’s too bad that their policy proposals are dangerous.
