A Dutch historian has become an overnight sensation for two appearances, one in Davos and the other on Tucker Carlson’s Fox News program. Both were instances of becoming famous for nothing at all.
Earlier this month, Rutger Bregman spoke as part of a World Economic Forum panel in which he used his platform to attack the rich. His remarks helped him become an overnight social media sensation.
How come? For these comments that made “jaws drop”:
“I mean 1500 private jets have flown in here to hear Sir David Attenborough speak about how we’re wrecking the planet.
“I hear people talking the language of participation and justice and equality and transparency.
“But then almost no one raises the real issue of tax avoidance. And of the rich just not paying their fair share. It feels like I’m at a firefighters conference and no one is allowed to speak about water.
“We can talk for a very long time about all these stupid philanthropy schemes, we can invite Bono once more, but, come on, we got to be talking about taxes. That’s it. Taxes, taxes, taxes — all the rest is bulls**t, in my opinion.”
Were these really as epic as they sound?
First, so many people have been pointing out the hypocrisy of the elite, like Al Gore, flying around in private jets to talk about global warming.
Second, demanding higher taxes isn’t new. Heck, even the billionaires have demanded that their taxes be raised, despite the fact they can write checks to the Treasury. In fact, if you were to demand tax cuts for the rich at a place like the WEF, then you’d be more rebellious than spouting a leftist trope of “we can solve the world’s problems if we gave the government more money.”
Then, because of his statements, he was asked to appear on “Tucker Carlson Tonight.” But the interview never aired because Bregman became rude and belligerent and goaded Carlson into using profanity.
The clip can be viewed here:

Before the clip went viral, the media made it sound as if Carlson just started insulting Bregman for no reason.
In today’s world, you are heroic and speak truth to power if you regurgitate talking points.
