President Donald Trump and the Republicans aren’t exactly beacons of fiscal conservatism. The GOP talks a great game when not in power, but once they regain control of the White House and Congress, they abandon their commitment to cutting spending, balancing the books, and paying down the debt.
The president unveiled his budget proposal
Here is what we know:
– It is the biggest on record with $4.75 trillion in spending.
– It runs a budget deficit of $631 billion by the time Trump leaves office in 2025.
– The Trump budget adds $7.9 trillion to the national debt over 10 years.
Yet, for whatever reason, we are expected to believe that the Trump budget tackles debt and deficits. He writes to the Congress:
“My 2020 Budget builds on the tremendous progress we have made and provides a clear roadmap for the Congress to bring federal spending and debt under control. We must protect future generations from Washington’s habitual deficit spending.”
So much for fiscal conservatism in the modern era.
