Let’s be candid: fiscal conservatism has been abandoned in the age of Trump. Despite Republicans complaining about former President Barack Obama, the GOP has not fared any better.
Case in point, the budget deficit.
This week, the Treasury Department released new fiscal data and found that the budget gap widened to $691 billion in the first half of fiscal 2019. Although the government continues to see an increase in revenues, spending was a lot higher.
The budget deficit is on track to top $1 trillion by the end of FY 2019.
The deficit now represents 5.1 percent of the gross domestic product (GDP), up from 3.8 percent a year ago.
This is further evidence that you should never believe Republicans when it comes to the budget. They will always stab you in the back.
