The first Democratic primary debate was held on Wednesday night in Miami.
Let’s just say that you would have been better off clipping your toenails, staring at the ceiling, and/or searching for dank memes of President Donald Trump.
The debate was pretty much as you expected: free stuff, a denial of reality (abortions for men?!), and certain candidates getting more time than others.
But there were some interesting moments.
Here are a few observations from the first debate:
– Tulsi Gabbard pulverized Tim Ryan when she informed him that the Taliban didn’t attack the United States. It was al-Qaeda. It would have been even better if she added “…al-Qaeda, who is now an ally of the United States!”
– Who the heck is former Rep. John Delaney? This guy has zero shot at winning the nomination. Why 65,000 people donated to his campaign is befuddling. That money, even if it was a buck, would have been put to better use on a can of Pepsi.
– The Spanish speaking was annoying. It was funny the seething look that Cory Booker gave Beto O’Rourke when he started speaking Spanish.

– Speaking of Beto, why does he always behave as if he is a teenage boy asking the hottest girl in high school to the fall dance? When he said climate chang was the greatest foreign policy threat, he was about to start crying.
– The moderators were bad. They asked Gabbard about her positions on gay people when she was young, but then they refused to ask Elizabeth Warren about claiming to be a Native American in her adult years.
– Gabbard was the only likable Democrat on that debate stage, though it gets frustrating when she starts gabbing on progressivism.
– It was interesting to hear many Democrats admit that the party has become the party of the elites.
– Nobody really stood out. One thing that Donald Trump did in 2016 was point out the GOP’s flaws and failures and attack the record of his opponents. The candidates last night, though they sometimes sparred, embraced Ronald Reagan’s 11th Amendment.
– How many times are the candidates going to say “join us”? Creepy.
– Jay Inslee (?) said Russia invaded a democracy (meaning the U.S.). So, does that require a military response?
– Bill de Blasio wasn’t as bad as expected. On foreign intervention, the mayor was half right, half wrong: White House needs congressional approval, but the U.S. should never intervene in the internal affairs of another country.
– None of the Democrats like to admit that the Paris Agreement is a waste of paper and time. The U.S. left in 2017, but it still leads the world in slashing CO2 emissions.
– Ugh. There are going to be many more of these.
– Considering their border policies, the Democrats should win the White House. It would be great to see how they will inevitably mirror the policies of the last two administrations, but claim to be different.
Let’s see what part two brings.
