Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) says a lot of ridiculous things, and she continues to get away from it because nobody on the left calls her out for it.
A recent claim she made was that the Democratic Party is “not a left party” but more of a “center or center-conservative party.”
Uh, huh.
But a comment she made that should be capturing more headlines was this:
“There are a lot of true believers that we can ‘capitalism’ our way out of poverty in the Democratic Party. If anything, that’s probably the majority.”
Two things. First, it is doubtful that the majority of Democrats think this way. Second, capitalism has actually significantly reduced poverty in both the United States and the rest of the world. The global poverty rate is at an all-time low. Indeed, it is better to be poor in America than middle-class in, let’s say, Portugal or France.
