Wet markets in China and the rest of the world have been well-documented by a lot of folks. These are open markets that sell everything from bats to rats to snakes – all in the same vicinity.
If you want a detailed look at these locations be sure to read this.
By now, you would think these wet markets would be shut down, or at the very least reined in. Nope. Many of the Chinese markets are reopening and they are still selling many different animals, according to the Daily Mail.
The British newspaper reports:
“The markets have gone back to operating in exactly the same way as they did before coronavirus. The only difference is that security guards try to stop anyone taking pictures which would never have happened before.”
Reportedly, these vendors are selling bats, snakes, spiders, lizards, and scorpions for human consumption (food and medical treatment).
Although conditions are dreadful, there isn’t much authorities can do. It is a lucrative industry, and any regulations or bans would ship trade to rural communities and underground.
The only way to stop wildlife trade and the creatures sold at wet markets is to eliminate the demand. If nobody is buying, then nobody will sell.
