Wow. This came out of nowhere.
John McAfee, the antivirus software tycoon, reportedly committed suicide in a Spanish jail cell on Wednesday night.
This comes after it was reported that he would be extradited to the United States to face federal charges on tax evasion.
He was arrested in October and waited for his extradition. Barcelona police are investigating the circumstances around his death, with Spanish reporters noting that “everything points to suicide.”
In addition to tax evasion, McAfee was accused of defrauding bitcoin investors out of about $13 million in two schemes. One of them consisted of buying large quantities of alt coins and then inflating the price by promoting them on Twitter. Once the price jumped, he sold and made a $2 million profit.
McAfee claimed at a hearing that the federal case was politically motivated.
He was 75.
