News Story of the Day: Are e-cigarettes as bad as tobacco cigarettes? If you’d listen to a bureaucrat or a government-funded scientist, you’d think that e-cigarettes will kill you as soon as you put it in your mouth. The latest plethora of science, minus one which is what’s being reported on, suggests that e-cigarettes aren’t as dangerous as tobacco, they aren’t a gateway to tobacco and they will actually help you quit smoking.
Dr. Michael Siegel, a professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences at Boston University School of Public Health, told the Daily Caller that the one study that says e-cigarettes are as bad as tobacco is just plain false and disingenuous in its findings.
“This study confirms previous findings that e-cigarette vapor can cause damage to epithelial cell lines in culture, and that the damage caused by e-cigarette vapor is much lower than that caused by tobacco smoke. However, it cannot be concluded from this cell culture study that e-cigarette vapor actually has toxic or carcinogenic effects in humans who use these products.”
The only concern that Siegel has is that if cigarette smokers turn to e-cigarettes and conclude there isn’t much difference between the two then they’d go back to tobacco. That’s the real danger, says Siegel.
But perhaps governments hate the idea that the free market and human ingenuity finally found a way to kick the deadly habit and save lives. The government can’t be made a fool of and can’t be ridiculed over its ridiculous policies over the last 30 years.
In the end, vape away.
Chart of the Day: You want to see how great the United States is performing with Obamanomics? Well, this chart (via the American Thinker), which compares the U-3 unemployment rate with those out of the labor force, sums up the state of the labor market entirely. It seems the freelance economy (SEE: What will the ‘1099 economy’ look like in 2016?) will benefit greatly from the poor jobs growth.
Illustration of the Day: Although this doesn’t show the more important stories of 2015, this is still a pretty cool graphic published on Fast Company. It highlights 143 events from 2015, including the 2016 presidential candidates, the anti-vaccination movement, the Matt Damon picture “The Martian” and the end of David Letterman as CBS talk show host. It doesn’t show any of the stuff from Seymour Hersh or how the minimum wage is killing jobs in Seattle. Oh well.
Quote of the Day: The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released its annual “Women in the Labor Force: A Databook” report, and it’s something likely omitted from the daily newscast on CNN, which just itches for those gender inequity stories. The study found that Asian women are earning nearly as much as men and earning more than white women. Essentially, if you believe in pay equity legislation then you should support a law that equalizes pay between whites and Asians. This is what the quote of the day mentions.
Here is what Mark Perry of the American Institute writes:
“Asian women are gaining on American men and now earn only 3% less on average than the average male worker. White women are falling behind relative to female Asian workers, as are white men falling behind relative to the earnings of Asian men. If gender pay disparities prove discrimination and motivate legislation, then maybe we need laws to equalize pay between whites and Asians?”
Video of the Day: We’ll finally see some Donald Trump ads over the next couple of months. Trump, who claims he is $35 million under budget, announced that he will be spending $2 million per week on ads moving forward. Does it really matter at this point, though? He’s around 20 points ahead and has been teflon know matter what he has said. Here is Trump telling reporters:
