In the wake of nationwide protests, the Venezuelan leadership is desperate to hold onto power. They will do whatever it takes to control the people, even if it means greater suffering and misery.
Speaking on “Sundays with Maduro,” President Nicolas Maduro announced on his regular television show that he will increase the minimum wage by 60 percent, reports the Associated Press. Moving forward, Venezuela’s minimum wage would be $3 per day.
“We’re here to take care of the workers, those who are most humble, and not the privileges of the oligarchs,” Maduro said.
This would be the third minimum wage increase this year, and the 15th wage hike since taking power in 2013.
The report suggests that the president is also handing out hundreds of different homes. Using Chinese funding, the Venezuelan socialist government has proceeded to give the people homes. However, much like the food situation, it is likely that only the connected will get their hands on these abodes.
Unfortunately, minimum wage increases and free housing won’t do much to solve the nation’s problems. Everything from a food shortage to a paucity of medicine, the entire country is being deprived of the most basic necessities of life thanks to socialism.
What good will a higher minimum wage do when the bolivar’s value has cratered to effectively and there is no food or water to purchase.
